Subject: myths and truths
As an introduction to the life and work of frank gilbreth, a good start is the book, cheaper by the dozen, by a son and a daughter. The film of the same name is enjoyable bbut pure hollywood fakery. The actor , webb,s portrayal is ridiculous. The real frank gilnreth first worked as a brick layer ..In his career, he actrd with humanity and compassion with people of all levels of society and thus was able to ontain their full cooperation.. The actor, webb would have been treated with hostility , but perhaps webb is portrayal represents the character of many of the later practitionrs of time and motion study .. In thes respect, chaplin ,s modern times ^1936^film is an exposition of the misuse of gilbreth,s work..I believe that gilbreth and his his wife were fine and decent people The prelinger films are not ebtertainment but are a valuable historical resource..Consideration of the gilbreth heritage will produce spirited debate. Perhaps he should have stuck to the study of workers in outdoor activity, such as brick laying and not ventured into factories and offices ?
Subject: Watch for the Micro-Chronometer!
These extraordinary films speak volumes about this remarkable man and his accomplishments. Gilbreth, who had 12 kids and was the author of 'Cheaper By The Dozen', was a true renaisssance man, film-maker, inventor, and most importantly, the man who championed the methods of motion study. You have to realize all of this was made in the 1920's, and all of the demonstrations no doubt were to be mechanized in the years to come. So a lot of this is very primitive today. Mind you it is kind of funny to watch how people did tasks and how Gilbreth develops methods of doing it FASTER! While all of this is going on, GIlbreth has his 1910 hand cranked camera recording the action, timing his cranks with his Micro-chronometer. Totally fascinating to watch, this is highly reccomended!
Subject: Classic Time-Motion Film Clips
Excellent clips of Gilbreth. Good look at some of the areas he took time/motion study to.
For those not familiar with time-motion study, it was a major step forward in management practices mostly for the manufacturing area. Part of what we now call "Scientific Management" - Gilbreth and Frederick Taylor being the most recognizable names. The general idea is to increase the efficiency of workers by minimizing the movements and creating a most favorable environment for their work. Work smarter, not harder...
Gilbreth, his wife, and kids are the ones highlighted in the popular film "Cheaper by the Dozen" (1950) where he used his kids to help in his motion studies.
